Artweek

The loss of universal humanity towards nature is a common vexation to most that care. Nevertheless it should be set at high crucial standards; that might seem difficult to reach at first for as humans, we are used to manmade commodity; things such as comprehension and acceptance of nature with all it yields. The Ego should not surpass the Eco. Throughout history the human kind has been in awe by the wonders of nature leading to the creation and manifestations in the arts; such as music, literature, and painting; and sciences; the study of our physical surroundings.

arte_FIST is a non-profit foundation whose sole purpose relies in promoting the ephemeral Land Art; temporary art; and how it benefits not only humans but also nature and the organisms within it. To amplify the six senses by developing sensitivity through the visual language is our mission. We allow this to occur by cultivating an interaction that involves the imitation of nature through the “objects” that represent the creator’s work of art.
arte_FIST has been working on several proposals that include themes such as the history of art and the promotion of contemporary visual arts. Our “exhibition gallery”; as we propose it to be; is within Dorado Beach, therefore all art will be installed and developed here. arte_FIST is proud to have presented Art Week ’09, where there was an opportunity provided for anyone to reach within their souls and find the acceptance and respect nature deserves, for we are all connected.

What is Land Art?

“In the late sixties, both in the United States and Great Britain, the contemporary movement known today as Land Art was beginning to emerge. Not understanding why exactly, many young artists of the epoch abandoned art galleries as well as the traditional art spaces to work in places far from the public pollution of the great metropolises. These places included natural elements and their landscapes. For some it was a response to the artistic trend of the moment “the technological formalism of minimal art” or a reaction to Pop Art “which rejected tradition to encompass the urban culture”. To make matters even more radical, it was also seen as “part of a revolt against painting, sculpting, and the anti-formalist trend of the late sixties, which included conceptual and ‘Povera’ art”.” –San Juan, March 2009 Juan Carlos Lopez Quintero, Curator, MAPR

What is Artweek at Dorado Beach?

“Dorado Art Week is dedicated to the art of landscape, a genre called Land Art. By claiming the open spaces of nature, Land Art; also known as the art of grand scale; has overflowed its own objective. Throughout the extended concepts of beauty and subtleness from nature in its wild state, Land Artists have suggested a series of new visions. This is, of course, regarding the space of landscapes and nature. Land artists have had the unique sense of utilizing the landscapes as a canvas. “Art inside a canvas is like the bird inside a cage”.“– Lourdes I. Ramos Rivas, Ph.D., Executive Director, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico

The Presentation of the Landscapes:

Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Maria Elena Perales’ academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree with 001a major in Sculpture and Painting from the School of Plastic Arts of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and a work in plastic arts (sculpture and urban art) at Academia San Carlos, Universidad Autonoma de Mexico. 002Her [Perales] sculpture Gota de lluvia (Drop of Rain) not only magnifies but also stops the liquid in an immediate state right before it impacts a surface. This sculpture symbolizes the scarce of water in many places throughout planet Earth. The un-relentlessness of this sublimated drop prevailed under natural light as well as during the nights.

El arbol prohibido (The Forbidden Tree) by Rafael Trelles; born003 in Puerto Rico with a bachelor’s degree in Plastic Arts from the University of Puerto Rico and graduate studies at the Academia San Carlos, Universidad Autonoma de Mexico; is a dry tree 004painted red located in the middle of a pond. The presence of this tree is filled with mythological, archetypal, but above all theological references for its purpose is to alarm us from the past of the future. It is about a call to reflection as asserted by the artist about our endangered natural environment; “The human being has disobeyed and is at the verge of expulsion from his only paradise”.

Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities from the University of Puerto Rico and another in Sculpture from Pratt 005Institute, Brooklyn, New York, Dhara Rivera is able to present a relationship with the environment established through the “acknowledgment of her historic-geographic memory”. Her piece pays homage to the tree that dominated the coasts of the Caribbean: the Pterocarpus Officinalis006Rivera encapsulates its miniature image in glass spheres that were placed in the water by a group of people in silence and an orderly manner; all the action was documented in video. The spheres are intertwined through a weaving of fibers, creating a net allusive to a respectful and symbolic exchange between the past and present
