more than two months, Ram\u00edrez has decided to make good use of his time to continue a series of drawings of helical shapes he has developed since adolescence. As he leads us to the center of his dwelling, he describes love as reviving from the depths of a chasm within the self. It breaks the surface as a selvaged shipwreck and becomes light. Alfredo\u2019s belief in the experience of love as physical, endogenous, and manifesting in every part of the anatomy expresses his agreement with Lacan\u2019s opinion that desire prevails over the will.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff;\">The camera pans horizontally to reveal the length of the eerily accurate externalized gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular and sexual organs. In <em>Tubo de Carne<\/em>, (Meat tube), 1995, the artist has unfolded the organs and stretched the spaces between them to express his views on love, the body and the mind. Perhaps he believes a dispassionate examination of the interstices of the organs will reveal the causes of these feelings that are beyond all rationale and intellectual or emotional disposition. How can a mere tube of meat generate such an indomitable sensation?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff;\">In Western culture, the body-mind relationship has been reflected on since the time of the Greeks. Plato makes a distinction between the perfect eternal Form, or Idea, and the imperfect ephemeral physical world.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">1<\/span> At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Descartes employs his method of doubt to systematically question the mind body connection in <em>Meditationes de prima philosophia, in quibus Dei existentia &amp; animae humanae \u00e0 corpore distinctio demonstrantur<\/em>.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">2<\/span> Alfredo does not consider the body separate from the mind which is suggested by <em>Tubo de Carne <\/em>and his contemplations on love.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff;\">As in the previous video, Alfredo continues to explore the themes that engross his thoughts: the body-mind relationship and helicoid shapes. He ruminates on the vertebral column and speculates about the many functions it may carry out in the human body. As his thoughts meander, he presents sculptures produced during the 1990s which demonstrate an acute awareness of physical existence, now intensified by the quarantine. These sculptures exhibit a preoccupation with mortality, as Alfredo considers the mind and body inextricably linked. These ideas were already seen in the previous capsule as exemplified by Tubo de carne.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-size: 12pt;\">Alfredo shares ideations which reveal how the creative process can be cerebral, emotional, and spiritual, simultaneously. His thoughts oscillate between biology and mathematics to the oneiric and existential. He links different anatomical structures in the backbone to consciousness. He discusses the mathematically defined shapes formed by the connected vertebrae and considers their proportion an expression of the golden ratio. He compares the human spine to that of other animals. He posits the spinal column is an organ that might perform functions for the brain, produce dreams, hold intuition and conceptions as well as allow for direct contact with the universe.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-size: 12pt;\">The artist\u2019s reflections are accompanied by photographs and videos of his sculptures of vertebral columns made of different materials which represent the various concepts aforementioned. These sculptures are complex experiments in which Alfredo subjects metal figures to different elements and temperatures to arrive at poetic constructions.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-size: 12pt;\">In Laboratorio de sue\u00f1os, 1990<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">1<\/span>, a bronze backbone made of stylized segments hangs from the roof of the exhibit hall by a cable tied to the topmost cervical vertebra. the sacrum connects to a refrigerator compressor in a metal box that lowers the temperature to -270 degrees until the the column is covered in a layer of frost.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-size: 12pt;\">Transfiguraci\u00f3n, 1996<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">2<\/span>, consists of two vertical aluminum vertebral columns presented parallel to each other. These structures are composed of vertebrae with stylized bodies and spinal processes, the lateral protrusions of bone, with a natural appearance, and a stylized sacrum. Both columns are attached to a stand with wheels connected to a transformer that generates 15,000 volts to form electric arcs, continuous, high-density electric current,<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">3<\/span> between the columns. Birth Right, 1996<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">4<\/span>, comprises two aluminum vertebral cords connected to a 15,000 volt transformer.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-size: 12pt;\">These genetically linked columns share a sacrum and separate toward the middle of the large open shared ribcage which lacks a sternum. On the figure&#8217;s proper right, to the viewer\u2019s left, the third rib from bottom to top is a dark color. As with Transfiguraci\u00f3n, the artist\u2019s style combines stylized and natural renderings of anatomical structures. La buena y mala leche, 1995 <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">5<\/span>, is the most faithful anatomical representation of the torso&#8217;s bone structure in aluminum. This figure is attached to a reservoir on a stand with wheels and a water pump that transforms it into a fountain of milk.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-size: 12pt;\">Ultimately, the artist reviews the beliefs and values which compose his life&#8217;s conceptual framework. Alfredo, a Venezuelan artist living in Milan, Italy, is the first international artist to join this virtual initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999999;\">The artist was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1957<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">1<\/span> and grew up in M\u00e9rida<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">2<\/span>. He decided on this career at an early age<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">3<\/span> and, to that end, began his training at the Escuela de Artes Pl\u00e1sticas Crist\u00f3bal Rojas in Caracas in 1975.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">4<\/span> Two years later, he was working at Studio Foong. He relocated to Italy, at 21 years of age, where he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (Brera Academy of Fine Arts) in Milan from<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999999;\">1980-1982 and the Associazione Internazionale Incisori, the Scuola Internazionale della Grafica (International Institute of Graphics) and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (Academy of Fine Arts) in Venice from 1982-1985.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">5<\/span> Alfredo returned to Venezuela six years later and began to teach drawing, painting, and printmaking at the Universidad de los Andes<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">6<\/span>, located in M\u00e9rida. In 2002, he studied at the Hochschule f\u00fcr bildende (University of Fine Arts) in K\u00fcnste, Hamburg.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">7<\/span> He currently resides in Milan, Italy where he is developing and producing various projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999999;\">Alfredo is a multidisciplinary artist who works with a variety of materials to create works which vary in scale.
